 What isabortion/ pregnancy termination?

Any medical intervention leading to ending of the pregnancy is considered abortion “Pregnancy termination”. In Israel, each and every legal termination has to be conducted in accordance with a committee, enforcing the conditions under which this procedure may be carried out. The appointment of the committee is fully confidential and the details are not being passed to any external source – family and guardians included.

Does the procedure affect the chances of getting pregnant again?

No. Whether the procedure performed medically or surgically, it is considered safe for both the patient and her reproductive organs. In order to be at ease and confident that the process is being done in the most optimal way, it is crucial to perform it in a certified facility, by a skilled and experienced gynecologist.

Prevalent circumstances for pregnancy termination

The law in the State of Israel permits performing abortion / pregnancy termination due to the following circumstances:

·          Age: a woman younger than 17 and older than 40

·         The nature of the relationship: In cases when the pregnancy was resulted by prohibited relationships (incest or rape) or out of wedlock.

·         Fetal development: in cases when a fetal abnormality was discovered during pregnancy monitoring.

·         Maternal health: in cases when the pregnancy or the childbirth hold a risk to the woman’s life (both physical or mental).

·         Cases of exposure to drugs or substances known to be harmful and causing fetal abnormalities.

How is it done?

Pregnancy termination can be performed in two ways: medication or surgery.

Medical pregnancy termination

Medical pregnancy termination is possible right after the delay in the menstrual cycle and up to the 7th week of pregnancy. This way considered as highly effective and safe method, it does not require hospitalization or medical supervision. It includes 2 types of pills: first for ending the evolvement of the pregnancy and the second cause uterine contractions for emitting all its contents.

Following the treatment, some side effects may appear on the first few day: pain and contractions (resembling “menstrual cramps”) of varying intensity, vaginal bleeding, nausea and vomiting, changes in appetite, mood swings and fever. In cases when side effects continue or worsening – please contact the attending gynecologist.

Surgical pregnancy termination

Surgical pregnancy termination is also called curettage and it is performed under full anesthesia by a gynecologist and anesthesiologist. This procedure is suitable for pregnancy up to 12 weeks, although some medical centers perform it even up to 24 weeks. During the treatment, the surgeon sucks out all the contents of the uterus. After the procedure, some follow-up time in the hospital is required. It is a relatively simple procedure, but like any other surgical intervention, in rare cases it may lead to complications, requiring immediate and appropriate treatment.

In the following days, the side effects may include: nausea or vomiting, vaginal bleeding and pain in the area of the uterus.

Birth induction

Another type of pregnancy termination is birth induction. In this case, special medicaments are being inserted into the cervix, causing the uterus to contract, leading to a process of birth. This procedure is initiated when the pregnancy is beyond 23 weeks. It is chosen in order to keep the uterus intact and avoid health risks.
